Tennessee Paternity Attorney
Paternity is the male parentage of a child. When a child custody and/or child support battle ensues, paternity will often come into question. The family courts will require a paternity test to be administered before cases involving child custody and child support will be allowed to proceed. Paternity testing is a good way to prove or disprove a biological relationship between a father and child. Once paternity is established then a parent may pursue any child custody and/or child support issues.
How Paternity is Established
There are two different types of paternity tests that compare DNA (known as Deoxyribonucleic acid) that may be administered to prove or disprove parentage. The first type of test is called a PCR Test (Polymerase Chain Reaction Test) and it is performed by swabbing the inside of a person’s cheek to collect DNA. The second type is a RFLP Test, (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism Test). It requires taking a blood sample to test DNA and/or swabbing the inside of a person cheek.
